Buffalo Technology is first to market with a DVD player that supports 802.11g Wi-Fi networking (also supports an external 2.4GHz antenna for increased range). The major benefit of the LinkTheater progressive scan DVD player is that it enables multiple users to wirelessly access DVD-Movies and regular files stored on disc - on their TV, computer or laptop. Based on a EM8620L decoder chipset from Sigma Designs, the chipset is the first of its kind to support Windows Media Video 9 and Windows Media Video High Definition formats. As a result, the LinkTheater supports resolutions up to 1280x720 pixels and offers DVD up-conversion to 720p/1080i. The integrated Pcast module further lets you playback files stored on a network storage device and a USB 2.0 port allows you to access files stored on an external peripheral.
Pros: Built-in 802.11g Wi-Fi and USB 2.0 port; supports HDTV
Cons: No built-in hard disk; no WPA support
Release: Buffalo Technology, a global leader in the design, development and manufacturing of wired and wireless networking, storage and memory solutions has announced the LinkTheater 54Mbit/s Wireless Media Player with DVD (PC-P3WG/DVD).
This landmark solution is the only wireless progressive scan DVD player that enables users to wirelessly access on their TV just about any audio, video or digital photo file stored on their computer or storage device.
'With the increased demand for the integration of home networking and entertainment, the Buffalo LinkTheater is a logical progression into this market' stated Gerardine Lynch, product marketing manager for Buffalo Technology. 'The LinkTheater is not only a key feature in the living room, but is also future proof with HDTV. It is easy to use, making it fun for the whole family to enjoy and share those family photo's, listen to music or watch the latest releases on DVD'.
The LinkTheater uses the EM8620L decoder chipset from Sigma Designs. It is the only chipset of its kind to support Windows Media Video 9 and Windows Media Video High Definition. The product also provides 1280x720 dot resolution for superior picture quality. The LinkTheater offers DVD up-conversion to 720p/1080i and includes an integrated Progressive Scan DVD player so users can play DVD/SVCD formats.
The integrated Pcast module allows for easy playback of files stored on a network storage device such as the LinkStation by Buffalo. A USB 2.0 port allows users to easily access files stored on a digital camera, clip drive, card reader or external hard drive.
The LinkTheater includes 802.11g wireless technology for 54Mbit/s of wireless throughput. This allows users to gain high-speed wireless access to files stored on their network or stream digital media content such as music or videos. LinkTheater also includes Buffalo's patent pending technology, AirStation One-Touch Secure System (AOSS). AOSS provides users with simple, one-touch secure wireless configuration without the need for passwords or complicated encryption information.
The LinkTheater is also unique in its support of WMV, WMV HD, DivX, DivX HD and Xvid. The product includes composite and S-video input and a Component Video connector, and an external Scart adaptor which allows users to connect almost any HDTV, big screen or plasma TV. The product supports progressive output and 5.1 channel Dolby Sound and DTS.
Backed by a two-year warranty, the LinkTheater Wireless Network Media Player (PC-P3WG/DVD) will be available from the beginning of April at an estimated street price of £210.
