Samsung Challenges Laptop Design

Samsung Electronics has challenged conventional laptop design with the UK launch of two new innovative additions to its range. The M70 is apparently the world's first laptop with a detachable 19-inch widescreen LCD display, while the X1 is an ultra-light, ultra-slim, ergonomically-inspired system designed to appeal to both business and home users alike. We originally reported on the laptops in August.

The M70 was inspired by the needs of the laptop-focussed computer user, providing both versatility and ease of transport. This innovative new design allows you to minimise the weight and size of the system during transit by removing the screen and plugging the unit's body into another display. Having said that, it measures 435x314x38.4mm and weighs 4.4kg. The M70's detachable display can also be used as a full sized 19-inch monitor with existing home PCs.

Thanks to a widescreen display and relatively powerful features, the M70 may be an attractive alternative to a desktop computer for general computing. Additional features include a 19-inch SuperBright Gloss display that promises 'tremendous clarity and true colour reproduction' at a native resolution of 1680x1050 pixels. A dedicated nVidia Geforce Go 6600 graphics subsystem drives the screen, and the LCD docking cradle (bundled as standard) enables ergonomic positioning of the LCD to best suit the application or environment.

Samsung's latest 'AVS Now' technology enables you to quickly access your videos/DVDs, photos and audio files without booting Windows, and four USB ports, full-sized keyboard and the latest Intel Centrino mobile processor chip, offering the requisite features for work and play. It also supports a range of innovative input devices, including KBD with Numeric keypad and a PC Card-type type remote control. High performance speakers and a sub-woofer are also provided.

The X1 is the ultimate in ultra-light and stylish mobile computing. An original design concept that combines a space-saving, top-loading optical disc drive and new front keyboard location has been created to produce a thinner, lighter, truly portable 14-inch (1280x768 pixels) widescreen laptop. Created with ergonomics and durability in mind, the X1's keyboard location aims to reduce pressure and heat on palms and wrists while the water resistant feature helps drain spilled water to the bottom of the keyboard.

Weighing just 1.7kg, the X1 reflects Samsung's thin and light strategy. The optional X dock is a versatile external device that provides 'single click' connection and easy access to a wide variety of ports including parallel, serial, USB ports and DVI (Digital Video Interface). The SRS Sound System, 'Wide Speakers', PC Card-sized remote control, and multimedia quick buttons provide fast and convenient access to movies, music and photos.
