NEC Express5800 120Re-1/120Rg-2 rack servers

NEC has unveiled its next generation of ultra-slim and compact rack-optimised servers. The new Express5800/120Re-1 (from £1179 ex. VAT) and Express5800/120Rg-2 (from £1249 ex. VAT) are Intel-based workgroup servers for those looking for a file/printer or application server. Both servers have two Intel Xeon processors from 2.8GHz up to 3.6GHz with 1MB on-die L2 cache running on an enhanced high-speed 800MHz FSB. They also feature two integrated Gigabit Ethernet controllers and support up to 12GB of dual-interleaved DDR266/333 memory with Chipkill technology. The Express5800/120Re-1 is a 1U rack-optimised server that has three internal 1in. hot-swappable disk bays (or two fixed on the SATA model) and a choice of SATA or SCSI data options. The Express5800/120Rg-2 is designed to deliver more scaleable performance to small/medium businesses, with up to six 1in. internal hot-swappable disk drives in a 2U rack design. The system also supports a 3.5in. bay for a backup device.

Pros: Three years' on-site warranty; compact form factor
Cons: No remote management software for distributed environments

Release: Leading manufacturer NEC Computers (UK) today announces two new additions to its award-winning range of Express5800 servers, the 120Re-1 and 120Rg-2. These two-way Intel Xeon rack-optimised servers provide optimum levels of performance and expandability in ultra-slim and compact formats.

'The 120Re-1 and 120Rg-2 offer enhanced flexibility and capacity for future expansion,' explained Hamilton May, product manager of NEC Computers (UK). 'With their slim design and enhanced technological capabilities, these new servers are ideal for workgroups and departments requiring extensive power and reliability in space constrained environments.'

Both servers have two Intel Xeon processors from 2.8GHz up to 3.6GHz with 1MB on-die L2 cache running on an enhanced high speed 800MHz FSB providing optimal power and I/O throughput. They also both feature two integrated Gigabit Ethernet controllers for flexible network configuration and up to 12GB of dual-interleaved DDR266/333 memory with Chipkill technology.

The NEC Express5800/120Re-1 is a (1U) rack-optimised server with an innovative condensed design to deliver maximum performance in confined parameters. It has 3 internal 1in. hot-swap disk bays (or two fixed on the SATA model) and several external disk subsystem options. It is an easy to deploy solution for ISP/ASPs and High Performance Computing (HPC) applications thanks to its choice of SATA or SCSI data options.

The NEC Express5800/120Rg-2 is designed to deliver scaleable performance to small/medium businesses, remote workgroups and ISP/ASPs. With up to six 1in. internal hot-swap disk drives in a practical, space saving 2U rack design, the 120Rg-2 offers unparalleled levels of expandability. For optimum flexibility, the system also supports a 3.5in. bay for a backup device and has six free PCI-X slots (six 64-bit/100MHz slots or three PCI-X 64-bit/133MHz and three PCI 64-bit/33MHz as an option via a riser).

Both new servers are offered with a choice of RAID configurations and are further enhanced with ESMPRO and ExpressBuilder Set-Up and Configuration software. The NEC Express5800 family of Intel-based servers offers the most comprehensive range of server computing solutions providing reliable, scaleable, manageable systems for customers ranging from small businesses to corporate data centres. With its Express5800 servers NEC focuses on system availability, offering a wide range of solutions that include unique Intel-based fault-tolerant servers.
