Fujitsu Ships New Desktop Scanner, ScanSnap IIPlus

The ScanSnap IIPlus (fi-5110EOX2) is the next generation model in Fujitsu's ScanSnap range. It's still relatively small (284x146x150mm, 2.7kg), but it has a host of new features including better OCR support - you can now scan into fully searchable PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The ScanSnap IIPlus can now also scan A3 documents.

The desktop scanner is designed purely for scanning paper documents for rapid digital distribution throughout your company. Whether day-to-day business correspondence, business cards or multi-page colour A4 or folded A3 brochures, the ScanSnap IIPlus copies each document and saves it automatically as a PDF file.

However, as the unit is sheetfed, it doesn't support bulky materials such as books or magazines. There's no Twain or WIA drivers either, so you can't start a scan from most programs, and you can't scan and perform OCR in one step. Lastly, there's no scan-to-fax option.

Scanning at 150- to 600 dpi, the ScanSnap IIPlus can scan at an impressive rate of 15 pages-per-minute (duplex 30 pages), according to Fujitsu. In addition to standard formats from A6 to A4, the new model lets you scan A3 size by inserting the page into the all-new folding document carrier. Even sensitive photographic papers can be processed by using the ScanSnap document carrier.

The unit comes bundled with some new software including Fujitsu's ScanSnap Organiser and a full version of Adobe's excellent Acrobat 7.0 Standard, which allows you to attach passwords to your scans. You also get a copy of the company's CardMinder 2.0, which allows you to manage your business cards, in addition to ABBYY's FineReader for Fujitsu ScanSnap OCR suite.

Andrew Cowling, ScanSnap European Marketing Communications Executive, Fujitsu Europe concluded: 'We continue to see a marked growth in the demand for products that help office professionals share, manage, and access information effectively. Our customers demand powerful document management tools that are easy to use and small enough to fit on their desktops for quick access. We feel the new ScanSnap meets these needs - offering fantastic functionality at a price point that makes it feasible for everyone in the office to have a personal unit.'
