Dell Gives Servers Dual-Core Speed Boost

Dell has today extended its enterprise range with the introduction of two PowerEdge servers. Featuring Intel dual-core processor technology, Dell claims the systems offer performance increases of up to 79 per cent compared to their predecessors.

The PowerEdge 830 and PowerEdge 850 servers provide the performance and power of two processing units in a single socket. Both systems deliver up to twice the memory of their predecessors, a choice of three different processors and advanced management features to help customers get even greater value and flexibility from their investment.

The PowerEdge 830 is a single socket tower server for workgroup, remote office and small business customers. It is designed for Web serving, Internet access, or running messaging, back-office, and productivity applications and with dual-core technology. Dell claims the system delivers up to 62 per cent greater performance than the PowerEdge 800.

The PowerEdge 850 is a single-socket 1U (1.75in.) rack-mount server designed for small business and data centre customers. It is destined as a Web and infrastructure server and uses next generation technologies to give customers scalability and scope for future growth. With advanced dual-core technology, Dell claims the PowerEdge 850 delivers up to 79 per cent greater compute-intensive performance and up to 26 per cent greater Web-serving performance than its predecessor, the PowerEdge 750.

The PowerEdge 830 offers optional hot-plug SCSI RAID Arrays, PCIe and a tool-less chassis for reduced maintenance and installation time. The PowerEdge 850 includes a new high-performance PCIe architecture with a choice of two risers, as well as dual embedded Gigabit NICs.

Additional features of the servers include a choice of 2.53GHz Intel Celeron, 2.8- or 3.6GHz Intel P4 with 800MHz frontside bus, or 3.0/3.2GHz Intel Pentium D dual-core processor, Intel E7230 chipset with scaleable 1067MHz frontside bus, up to 8GB of DDR2 SDRAM, and optional SATA or U320 SCSI hard disk drives.

'Dell is committed to integrating next generation technologies to drive investment protection and productivity improvements for growing organisations,' said Steve Lewis, Enterprise Systems Director, Dell UK. 'With dual-core technology and other advanced features in systems like the PowerEdge 830 and 850, Dell is helping customers to derive greater value from their IT investments, now and in the future.'
