Oracle today announced the immediate availability of Oracle9i Application Server Java Edition, broadening the companys infrastructure platform offerings. The new enterprise-class application server offering provides tools for developing and deploying Java applications and Web services at a lower price than current solutions from IBM and BEA Systems.
The Java programming language was developed by Sun Microsystems. Its a robust and versatile solution and enables developers to write software on one platform and run it on another, create programs to run within a Web browser, develop server-side applications for online forums, stores, polls, processing HTML forms and the like, as well as write applications for mobile phones, two-way pagers and other consumer devices.
Oracle9i Application Server Java Edition is a Java software package that includes an application server and an integrated development environment (IDE), as well as development and deployment capabilities for transactional business applications, Web services, dynamic Web sites and e-commerce storefronts. The software runs on Linux, Windows and Unix platforms.
Oracle9i Application Server Java Edition will help Oracle and its strong reseller community seed the lucrative small-and medium-sized business markets, while also addressing the needs of large enterprise companies, said Thomas Kurian, senior vice president of development, Oracle9i Application Server. Unlike low-priced entry-level versions of application servers that offer limited J2EE functionality, Oracle9i Application Server Java Edition is a full-fledged, enterprise-class software package. No other vendor offers this level of functionality at this price.
The software includes Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE, an application server with clustering; Oracle9i JDeveloper, a complete Java Integrated Development Environment (IDE); Oracle HTTP Server for XML and Web services support; Oracle9iAS TopLink object-to-relational persistence software; and Oracle Enterprise Manager for end-to-end system management.
Oracle9i Application Server Standard and Enterprise Editions are also available for $10,000 and $20,000 per processor, respectively. The software can be purchased from the
Oracle Technology Network.
