Creative has introduced the DiVi CAM 428, a low-cost mini digital camcorder sporting a video recorder, digital camera, voice recorder and MP3 player. The 4-megapixel DiVi CAM 428 targets a relatively new market segment - consumers who want a decent video camera but are held back by the relatively high prices - including students, young executives and parents.

Smooth matte finishing coupled with the ergonomic design adds to the aesthetic component of the camera, and it's available in two colours - Striking Silver and Intense Black. The main feature of the DiVi CAM 428 is its ability to record MPEG-4 movies in 640x480 (VGA) resolutions at 30fps (frames per second). The result should be smooth and fluid video in either AVI or ASF format.

The DiVi CAM 428 also functions as a basic MP3 player and voice recorder, and can even double up as a portable storage device. For voice recording, the built-in voice recording function records voice clips in WAV format. The camcorder is also equipped with an auto-focus lens. Other specifications include a 4x digital zoom, five different flash modes to suit different situations (Auto, Off, Red-Eye Reduction, Force and Slow-sync), as well as Night and Macro (16-21cm) modes.

An interesting feature is the LCD display which has a flip-and-twist capability, allowing you to rotate it up to 270 degrees. The 2-inch LTPS (Low Temperature Poly Silicon) LCD screen also lets you preview and playback videos. The 1000mAh Lithium-ion rechargeable battery should allow for the capture of hundreds of photos on a single charge, according to Creative.

The camera comes with a Secure Digital (SD) expansion slot, and DirectPrint support means you can print from compatible printers independently of your computer. Additionally, you can connect the camera directly to any TV (NTSC or PAL) with the supplied video/audio cables and playback your movie clips or photos on a larger screen.
