FileMaker Server 8 Now Shipping

FileMaker has started to ship the latest version of its flagship database server software. Designed for up to 250 users and 125 FileMaker Pro database files, the new server software promises an improved database engine designed to make searching, adding, deleting and editing data significantly faster than in FileMaker Server 7 (up to 89 per cent).

In addition to an improved database engine, FileMaker Server 8 provides automatic consistency checking on all hosted files for increased data reliability, error capture, event logging and better diagnostics insuring the integrity of files. It also supports all the new features of FileMaker Pro 8 and FileMaker Pro 8 Advanced, including complex search patterns and calculation functions. Finally, it supports a mix of FileMaker Pro 8 and FileMaker Pro 7 clients.

'One of the best things about upgrading to FileMaker Server 8 is that you can immediately begin hosting solutions for either FileMaker Pro 7 or Pro 8 clients,' says Ryan Rosenberg, vice president, Marketing and Services, FileMaker.

'The switching costs are extremely small and the productivity of your workgroup will see an immediate boost from recent improvements in our database engine. It is substantially faster, and our beta testers have confirmed that it produces results where it matters the most. Overall, FileMaker Server 8, along with the new FileMaker Pro 8, offer a great deal of gain, with very little pain.'

FileMaker Server 8 Advanced, planned to ship in early fall, will provide all that FileMaker Server 8 offers plus powerful Web publishing and external connectivity options. FileMaker plans to ship FileMaker Mobile 8, a companion to FileMaker Pro 8 designed specifically for Palm OS and Pocket PC handhelds, later this year. For the first time, FileMaker Mobile 8 will synchronise multiple devices with databases hosted by FileMaker Server.
