AVG UK, the official UK partner for Grisoft, makers of the popular AVG anti-virus family of software products, has today announced the immediate availability of AVG 7.1, a major new upgrade to its AVG family of anti-virus software products.

The company is touting the product as one of the strongest and most comprehensive anti-virus products available on the market today for detecting and removing viruses as well as other potentially unwanted programs.

AVG 7.1 contains about a dozen program enhancements including support for Windows 64-bit Edition, faster and improved file scanning, smaller update files, detection of unwanted applications, faster and improved file scanning, improved support for screen reader programs, in addition to more configuration options for AVG Resident Shield.

There's also an improved configuration wizard for the AVG Firewall Edition, new remote administration features, and event history logging. 'Today's release further enhances the value of AVG Anti-Virus to our customers,' said Michael Foreman, partner, AVG UK. 'It is immediately available free of charge to existing customers as long as they have a current AVG licence.'

Although this new release contains several product enhancements, the two most significant changes are its ability to go beyond virus detection and full Windows x64 support. AVG Anti-Virus 7.1 is designed to detect and remove a class of threats that Grisoft is defining as potentially unwanted applications. These programs are typically classified as spyware and adware, although Grisoft will only be detecting higher risk threats in this class.

Existing AVG customers can upgrade to the new 7.1 version through the standard update process. To ensure that all customers are able to take advantage of the full functionality offered by AVG 7.1 as soon as possible, the upgrade will be available as two updates.

A 'Recommended Update' includes program components while a second update include a number of additional components. Both are available immediately. Support for Windows 64-bit Edition applies only to customers with the full version of AVG Anti-Virus and does not extend to users of AVG Free.

As always, Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus software costs about half than equivalent anti-virus software products and includes double the standard licence period as well - two full years instead of just one - making it a good choice for home users seeking a high performance, non-intrusive anti-virus solution.
