Samsung has joined the dual core laptop party. The X60 (£899 ex. VAT) and R65 (£999 ex. VAT) both feature Intels new dual core processors (codenamed Yonah) and are pitched at home users.
Boasting a slightly larger memory, hard disk drive and 15.4-inch widescreen, Samsungs X60 equips the consumer with a decent array of mobile computing power, while the R65 provides an equally powerful alternative for the home user with greatly improved multimedia performance.
In both models, Intels dual core processor takes centre stage. However, Samsung claims an impressive battery life of 5h 30m, dependent on usage.
Key features of the X60 include a weight of 2.4kg, 15.4-inch SuperClear display featuring Samsungs exclusive Digital Natural Image Enhancement (DNIE) for outstanding image quality, as well as embedded PCI-Express Gigabit LAN solution, guaranteeing a stable network connection without the use of a PCI device.
In addition theres 802.11a/b/g wireless and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, twin-array microphones to filter out unwanted ambient noises and ensure high quality sound, perfect for video chatting or Internet phone calls, and an optional X dock, providing single click connection and easy access to a wide variety of ports including parallel, serial, USB ports and DVI to deliver improved digital image quality on large displays and projectors.
Offering equal performance and power, the R65 takes personalised entertainment to the next level with high-definition capabilities and extensive multimedia applications. It too comes with a 15-inch SuperClear display, but adds built-in rear SRS 3D speakers for the ultimate multimedia experience.
Samsung AVS Now is also included to watch DVD movies at the touch of a button and Intel 945GM Express chipset to enjoy DVD movies, 3D games and stream music videos in crystal clear colour. There are also two PC card slots that use PCI Express (54- or 34mm) or PCMCIA cards for increased storage flexibility.
Laptop users increasingly demand powerful but stylish products that combine the functionality of a desktop PC with the portability of a laptop, said Mark Jennings, Notebook Marketing Manager at Samsung Electronics UK. The inclusion of Intels recently launched dual core processor in these two laptop enables Samsung to meet this demand and offer more computing power, increased battery life and complete connectivity, without compromising design and portability.
With plans to ship over a million units of the latest chips worldwide over the next three weeks, the new platform looks set to storm the market this year. Intel claims that over 230 laptops based on the Yonah platform are slated for release.
As Hyperthreading applications are already in use, these software are able to fully utilise the dual-core processors. Users looking for a 64-bit processor need not wait long as Intel has plans to release a 64-bit-capable Yonah chip by mid of 2006.
