RTX Cordless LAN Internet DUALphone

RTX’s new wireless Internet telephone is the first with on-screen e-mail and news. Taking Internet telephony a step further, the new LAN Cordless DUALphone has integrated Internet access. It will be officially announced at the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover, Germany later this week.

Phoning over the Internet has become widely accepted as an inexpensive alternative to fixed-line tariffs, with voice over IP technology (VoIP). In the future, new service applications will emerge addressing rising customer demand for wireless access to the Internet.

RTX, a specialist developer of wireless communication solutions, will be unveiling a new device at this year’s CeBIT which not only unifies both functions, but also has an integrated colour display. The new LAN Cordless DUALphone is a session initiation protocol (SIP) device that combines a standard phone connection, Internet telephony and storage for Web content.

The base station is connected both to the conventional telephone system and to the broadband Internet link, thereby allowing calls from both channels. The LAN Cordless DUALphone offers on-screen information such as the latest news, e-mail, stock market data, weather forecasts, traffic queues or sports results - all displayed on its colour (128x128-pixel) display. Availability depends on the services provided by the carrier concerned.

The LAN Cordless DUALphone’s extensive functionality is not only an appealing alternative to conventional phones for consumers. RTX also creates attractive value added for carriers and phone operators who can exploit the inexpensive combination of phone and Internet access to combat falling sales and diminishing customer bases in the conventional telephony market.

The phone has a talk time of around 8 hours and standby time of 240 hours. It can even be operated at a distance up to 300 meters in the open, and its built-in phonebook allows up to 200 entries.

The new RTX LAN Cordless DUALphone will be available for providers and carriers after the end of CeBIT. RTX is currently negotiating with possible partners in Europe. The first European incumbent teleoperator has already decided to test the LAN Cordless DUALphone as part of their VoIP roll out.
