BIOS: Technology Means Business

Brother is introducing a new range of mono laser printers which come with free network management software - ideal for environments where networked printers are spread over a large area.

The new HL-5200 series offers free BR Admin network management software, so printing issues such as consumable replacement can be identified and dealt with quickly and easily, says Brother.

The BR Admin software keeps the network administrator informed of the status of every printer or all-in-one printer connected to the network. If, for example, network settings need to be changed, this can all be done centrally and on screen.

The HL-5200 series is aimed predominantly at sectors requiring a high print volume. All models in the HL-5200 series support a new higher yield toner, offering up to 7000 A4 pages (at 5 per cent coverage), as well as increased print speed of up to 28ppm and a relatively high print resolution of up to 1200x1200dpi.

Each printer includes a multi-purpose tray which has a standard paper capacity of 250 sheets, expandable to both 500 and 750 sheets through optional paper trays.

The range comprises the £199 HL-5240 (non-networked, entry-level model, with all of the features mentioned above with 16MB memory - expandable to 528MB), £249 HL-5240DN (same as HL-5240, with 32MB memory - expandable to 544MB - automatic duplex printing and network facility), £299 HL-5270DN (same as HL-5240DN with the benefit of a three colour LCD screen, and a 7000 page yield toner as standard), and £349 HL-5280DW (same as per HL-5270DN and is also wireless-ready).

Consumables for this range are new and improved. The TN-3130 offers up to 3500 A4 pages (at 5 per cent coverage), the TN-3170 offers up to 7000 A4 pages (at 5 per cent coverage) and the DR-3100 drum unit runs at approx 25000 A4 pages. This adds up to a low cost per copy of approximately 1.2p.

As with all Brother mono laser products, drums and toners are separate. If one runs out, both items don’t need to be replaced simultaneously, saving cash and the environment. All models offer Brother’s one year on-site warranty - so any downtime will be minimised because product do not need to be returned for repair.

And all machines in the range are TCO compliant, which means they have passed 50 tests covering ergonomics, energy consumption, emission levels and ecological soundness.

This HL-5200 series also supports barcode printing without having to invest in expensive SIMM or DIMM upgrades - it’s simply a case of inputting the relevant information into the printer and producing barcodes of any size, in any direction with text and built-in checksum error digit correction.
