Ricoh is advising companies to monitor the use of their colour printers and photocopiers in the wake of new research which revealed that a staggering 87% of businesses are footing the personal print bill for their employees.
The research, carried out by Ricoh, found that over half of UK companies allow their employees to use printers and photocopiers for personal use and, of those, 57% do not monitor the levels of personal printing.
Chas Moloney, director of marketing at Ricoh UK, comments: The average cost of printing a photo in colour is about 16 pence. Obviously this varies from printer to printer, but the reality is that the increased use of digital cameras and the Internet, coupled with a failure to proactively control print flows effectively means that many companies are not aware of the real cost to their businesses.
Companies are starting to realise that scrutinising print costs can lead to huge savings, but they need to go one step further and be aware of the levels of personal print use as well. The initial challenge for most companies is establishing who is printing documents, what they are printing and which machines they are using to do so. Once this has been identified, IT managers can calculate the cost to the business and controls can be applied, if necessary, to prevent leaked expenditure, says Moloney.
Research results were collated from a survey of 185 UK businesses, including local and central government, SMEs, national and multi-national companies.
