Symantec ServerMagic 6.5 for NetWare

Symantec's ServerMagic 6.5 for NetWare (versions 3.x to 6.5) is a software solution that aims to help you minimise system downtime and reduce overall cost of network administration by offering NetWare server reconfiguration, deployment, backup and disaster recovery tools. Available from next week, ServerMagic 6.5 for NetWare will be one of the first software releases under the Symantec brand following its acquisition of PowerQuest.

ServerMagic 6.5 for NetWare promises to simplify the process of managing storage needs by allowing you to create, delete, move, copy, resize, image and merge NetWare volume segments across hardware configurations. The software can also be used to convert existing traditional volumes into NSS pools in order to ensure that data volumes on NetWare servers are backed up.

Targeted at NetWare administrators, ServerMagic 6.5 for NetWare lets you manage aspects of your storage environment. For example, rather than going through a server reconfiguration process - which can take several hours to manually back up - reconfigure the volumes and then restore the data back to the server, ServerMagic 6.5 for NetWare lets you resize volumes without losing data. Images of hard disks can also be captured and then deployed to systems that need to be recovered, such as in the case of a severe system crash or virus outbreak.

The software lets you perform a full restore in minutes, according to Symantec, using the bootable CD Recovery Environment. Based on the company's Virtual Volume Imaging (V2i) technology, ServerMagic 6.5 for NetWare provides specific tools for server reconfiguration, deployments, upgrades and system recovery. It also promises to eliminate many of the steps you need to go through to undergo an upgrade, which can involve backing up the server, deleting all the data, partitions and volumes, installing the new NetWare software as well as configuring partitions and volumes.

Other key features of the software include the ability to reconfigure and manage NSS pools, including functionality to expand and shrink NSS volumes and manage volume quota, convert existing volumes to NSS pools, mirror partitions, merge traditional volume segments and resize volumes and NSS pools. The ServerMagic Drive Map allows you to view partitions, volumes and pools in their physical locations on the server's disks, and you can also dismount and image specific NSS storage volumes and pools while keeping other NSS pools online.
