Veritas Storage Foundation 4.0 for Windows

In another move towards utility computing, Veritas Software has released Storage Foundation 4.0 for Windows, a software application that claims to offer a simplified storage management solution for systems running the latest Windows operating systems. The software integrates with Microsoft platforms and allows you to manage storage and increase the availability of resources by pooling available memory from heterogeneous sources.

A key component of Veritas' utility computing approach, the product provides the critical foundation of 'always-on' storage availability across storage arrays. The software includes volume management and virtualisation capabilities (lets you create multiple 'virtual' servers on a single physical system) for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Storage Server 2003. It also includes licence options for Dynamic Multipathing (DMP), FlashSnap and Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS) support.

Vertisas' FlashSnap is a software-based snapshot solution that leverages Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), a Windows Server 2003-based technology that enables Microsoft-supported snapshots of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for backups and restores. FlashSnap also provides off-host processing for testing, data analysis and reporting.

Storage Foundation 4.0 for Windows also includes integration with Microsoft's latest storage technologies - Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), Virtual Disk Service (VDS) and Automated System Recovery (ASR) - support for Dynamic Multipathing, high availability through Dynamic Relayout, which delivers automated online reconfiguration capabilities, and a simplified management with Storage Foundation Assistant, which provides access to the software's most commonly used commands.
