Veritas Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers

Veritas’s Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers has over 90 enhancements, including faster Exchange Server backup and restore. The company also claims it’s simple enough to be used by all levels of users, on any size network.

‘‘Backup Exec delivers highly scalable data protection for small- to mid-sized Windows environments without imposing limits on the number of workstations, size of the protected database, or library configuration,’’ says Mark Bregman, executive vice president of Product Operations at Veritas. ‘‘It is simple enough for a novice user to install and use, while being flexible enough to meet the needs of remote office environments or large departmental workgroups.’’

Designed as a reliable, easy-to-use, cost-effective data protection solution, Backup Exec 9.0 offers server protection that can scale from a single server to a multi-server SAN. Features such as single-instance storage of message attachments, incremental and differential mailbox backups, and public folder restores should provide quicker backup, recovery and management of Exchange servers. During a restore, mailboxes and user accounts are automatically restored so that data and users can get back online quickly.

When combined with Windows Server 2003’s Open File option, Backup Exec automatically detects Volume Snapshot Service (VSS) components and provides frozen images to protect open files. Backup Exec’s Intelligent Disaster Recovery option integrates with Server 2003’s (and Windows XP’s) Automated System Recovery (ASR) functionality, which should provide faster, more reliable disaster recovery.

The software’s new interface consolidates data backup procedures in a browser-like window. Web-based administration is a new feature that can be used on Windows Server 2003-driven networks, or even Windows-powered NAS appliances that run Microsoft’s Server Appliance Kit. Veritas claims this new feature should make it easier to manage the day-to-day data protection operations from the administrator’s console.

Information Desk view provides information on how to use Backup Exec, including access to technical support information, online manuals and wizards that walk you through tasks such as media rotation, device sharing and disaster recovery. Veritas asserts that backup procedures using Backup Exec 9.0 are simple enough to be handled by all levels of users, on any size network. ‘‘The instructions and menus are in English - they are not just in geek,’’ Bregman concludes.
