Ipswitch IMail Server 8.1

Ipswitch has added new anti-spam features to its flagship mail server software. Designed to identify and stop evolving spamming techniques and give you more control over your day-to-day e-mail communications, version 8.1 adds word normalisation and advanced white list filtering (trusted IP addresses). Word normalisation acts as an anti-spam first response system by removing any non-alphabetic characters and punctuation before sending the message using anti-spam filters, such as Bayesian statistical filtering and phrase filtering. The software is available in different versions, depending on your needs: IMail Server Small Business (limited to five domains) costs £405, or £520 with a service agreement; IMail Server Professional (unlimited users and domains) is £870, or £1128 with a service agreement.

Pros: Boasts of 20 proven ways to effectively stop spam
Cons: Doesn't support Exchange or Domino servers

Release: Ipswitch, Inc., a leading provider of Internet productivity software for Windows, today announced new IMail Server anti-spam features designed to identify and stop evolving spamming techniques and give users more control over their day-to-day e-mail communication.

The addition of Word normalisation and advanced white list filtering extends Ipswitch's IMail Server's anti-spam arsenal and provides users with more than 20 proven ways to effectively stop spam. One of the most common spamming techniques is the use of punctuation to separate letters in e-mail subject lines. Messages with subject lines like 'm.o.r.t.g.a.g.e' make up nearly 20 per cent of spam and are designed to penetrate and fool spam filters. IMail Server's word normalisation feature acts as an anti-spam first response system by removing any non-alphabetic characters and punctuation before sending the message through rigorous anti-spam filters such as Bayesian statistical filtering and phrase filtering.

'Ipswitch is committed to being a leader in the fight against spam,' said Ipswitch's messaging product marketing manager, John Korsak. 'Ipswitch constantly monitors spammer techniques and develops ways to effectively combat them. We continue to add to IMail Server's anti-spam features in order to provide an all-in-one solution for delivering reliable, affordable and easy-to-use e-mail for the 60 million users who rely on IMail Server every day.' New IMail Server features advanced white list filtering (trusted IP addresses), white list domains and white list e-mail addresses can be placed in the same location and automatically skipped during spam checks, thereby reducing false positives and missed emails.

Single message identification makes it easier to track a message as it passes through various tests and processes, and with subject line modification messages flagged as spam can now include a warning in the subject line, making it easier for end-users to quarantine or immediately delete messages flagged as spam.
