Fujitsu-Siemens GPS-Enabled PDA

Fujitsu Siemens Computers has launched the first handheld with integrated GPS functionality. The Pocket LOOX N500 and Pocket LOOX N520 come pre-installed with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Premium Edition and Navigon's MobileNavigator 5 as an optional extra. Both handhelds have a new design and are available now from trade outlets for £239 and £259, respectively (ex. VAT).

Navigation has become one of the most important functions of handhelds for both commercial and consumer use. Whether it be a shipping agency to plan their routes, or for personal trips, navigation requirements now drive 60 per cent of handheld purchases, claims Fujitsu Siemens Computers. In addition, only a few years ago, you needed a fully equipped office to do what today's Pocket PC can handle.

Navigon's MobileNavigator 5 ships with maps for North America, 27 European countries and six Gulf States, as well as being usable in 16 different languages. Navigon is also developing specific navigation systems for new vehicles with auto makers BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford and Continental. In addition to navigation, you can manage your addresses or revert to your calendar.

The Pocket LOOX N520 (116x70x15mm, 141g) is equipped with Wi-Fi certified wireless LAN (802.11g) so connectivity to e-mail and data can be combined to keep you in touch. The new LOOX models are among the first on the market with an integrated antenna for GPS functionality. Other key features include an illuminated keyboard and a base station with headphones.

The PDAs are based on a 312MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor, 64MB (50.49MB available) memory, 64MB (26.79MB available) Flash ROM, and have a 3.5-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 240x320 pixels. Expansion ports comprise a single SD/MMC slot with support for SDIO, infrared and Bluetooth. The PDA is powered by a removable Lithium-ion battery (1200mAh).
