Innovation of the Month

Seoul-based Pantech has released the world's first mobile phone that includes built-in biometric security. The clamshell GI100 (82x40x22.5mm, 82.5g) works by using biometric technology to send an authorisation key when a registered fingerprint touches the phone. Thanks to a fingerprint recognition sensor, your fingerprints are recognised and remembered for various features such as fingerprint recognition, fingerprint authentication, and secret dialling. It can also be programmed to store a different key for each of your 10 fingers, thus allowing you to 'secret finger dial' up to 10 individual numbers depending on which finger you touch to the sensor. Another neat feature of the biometric security is that there's no log of any calls made from a registered signature, making it an extremely confidential and secure way of making private calls. Similar to any other modern phone, the GI100 also comes with a digital camera with a 10X digital zoom and flash, although this is based on a less impressive 1.3Megapixel CCD (1280x960 pixels). Other features of the dual-band (900/1800MHz) phone include support for video wallpapers, allowing you to view video clips on the main and sub-LCDs, as well as support for GPRS Class 10, WAP 1.2.1, SMS/EMS/MMS and Java. European availability is likely at the start of next year, although pricing hasn't been set.

Pros: Built-in biometric security; supports video wallpapers
Cons: No built-in Bluetooth or memory card slot; dual-band only

Edited Release: Pantech, a leading mobile phone producer, launches a new model called 'Fingerprint Recognition Phone (model: Pantech GI100)' to high-end mobile markets in Europe, Asia, and Middle East.

The world's first 'fingerprint-recognition' phone is designed for user-friendly security and convenience. Fingerprints are used for lock-in keys, memory dials, and games. This is the fruits of both applied ergonomics and state-of-the-art digital technology. GI100's excellence begins with its stylish visage.

Black and silver-toned body gives a contemporary look with straight-lined edges only sharpening overall physique. The GI100 weighs only 82g with snugly dimensions (82x40x22.5mm). Both 1.8in. main LCD and 1.2in. sub LCD provide enhanced pictures with 260K TFT. Built-in 1.3Megapixel CMOS camera with embedded flash can not only capture 15 frame shots, but record up to 30 minutes. Usage time allows 3 hours of talk and 200 hours of standby. Notably, Video Caller ID lets you identify a caller with a saved image or MJPEG file at your choice. Besides seven-colour LEDs sort callers into seven different caller groups.

With fingerprint recognition technology, the GI100 tightly controls personalised key entries. Only a registered fingerprint clears an authorisation to key in. Next, Secret Finger Dial allows total of ten memorised calls. Once registered, each of your fingerprints can be used for a quick dialling. Further, by sweeping fingerprints instead of pushing in keys, you can enjoy games like car racing, slot machine and match making. The flash memory of 256MB, Yamaha MA5 64 polyphonic ring tones, and short/enhance/multi message service capability enable to truly attain wireless interoperability. Phone book can save maximum of 800 numbers and maximum of 2.5 hours of voice recording.
