AMCC Extends SATA RAID Performance with Introduction of PCI-Express Family of Controllers

Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) [NASDAQ: AMCC], today announced the next generation of 3ware hardware SATA RAID controllers designed for high-performance PCI-Express® platforms. The 3ware 9590SE family is based on StorSwitch™, AMCC’s seventh generation non-blocking switched fabric storage architecture, extending the performance and feature set of the proven 3ware 9550SX.

The 3ware 9590SE family is available in 8-, 12- and 16-port versions, allowing a single controller to manage up to 8TB of raw storage with 500GB drives. The feature-rich controllers offer support for SATA II, including native command queuing (NCQ). All members of the family are also available with AMCC’s innovative Multi-lane connector system, with its highly reliable, locking cable/connector system that combines 4 SATA ports into a single locked connection on the controller. Multi-lane backplanes are available from several chassis vendors, bringing efficient cable routing, improved airflow and enhanced reliability to high-density storage applications.

“Our customers develop products in a broad range of applications, from network-attached storage (NAS) and disc-to-disc backup systems to video editing and security video recording. These rapidly-evolving applications continue to demand higher performance,” said Ron Macleod, sales director, AMCC Storage, for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). “The 3ware 9590SE allows system integrators to leverage the performance of the PCI-Express platform, as well as delivering high-density and data protection features at a cost-effective price point.”

The 3ware 9590SE family implements AMCC’s StorSave feature set, a powerful combination of reliability enhancements and an optional Battery Backup Unit (BBU) that maximize data protection and system reliability without sacrificing I/O performance in critical RAID modes, and which allow the 9590SE to use and protect both controller cache and disk cache.

For applications where several data streams are written simultaneusly, the 9590SE family also offers AMCC’s StreamFusion technology, an intelligent cache algorithm that maximizes application performance under heavy loads by dynamically detecting the presence of multiple simultaneous write data streams and efficiently allocating controller cache for maximum bandwidth, preventing the controller from becoming the performance bottleneck.
