Plasmon's UDO products will comply with environmentally focused RoHS directive

Plasmon (LSE: PLM), a market leader in professional data storage solutions, today announced its UDO (Ultra Density Optical) products will be RoHS compliant by 1st July 2006, in accordance with the European Union (EU) directive 2002/95/EC. Plasmon has undertaken a significant redesign effort to remove all restricted substances from product components so they can be safely and efficiently recycled at end-of-life.

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive (RoHS) was adopted in January 2003 by the EU, which bans the use of specified hazardous materials in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. Falling under the authority of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive (WEEE), the RoHS directive has been put in place to address concerns over the disposal of toxic waste and to establish environmentally responsible recycle procedures.

Current and future generations of UDO products targeted for RoHS compliance include UDO Drives, UDO G-Series libraries and the new UDO Archive Appliance. While RoHS directive jurisdiction includes only EU countries, Plasmon has made a corporate commitment to go beyond this requirement by providing RoHS compliant UDO products worldwide. Plasmon's European and OEM customers will receive RoHS compliant UDO products in time for the 1st July
2006 deadline with worldwide availability following several weeks later.

Plasmon recognises that the RoHS directive is being viewed with great interest by non-EU countries and that all or part of the directive could be adopted by federal or state agencies in North America and Asia. By ensuring that all UDO products meet the RoHS directive, Plasmon's channel and OEM partners will be fully prepared for future regulatory demands.

"Plasmon has thousands of customers throughout the EU and the Rest of the World that rely on UDO to meet their needs for secure archival storage and we are dedicated to providing environmentally responsible solutions for this growing customer base," said Nigel Street, CEO at Plasmon. "RoHS compliance is a strategic initiative for Plasmon and will be addressing both the technical and commercial consequences of this directive. Customers can be confident that all of our UDO based products will meet RoHS requirements and that our on-going development programs will ensure a long-term roadmap for future generations of UDO technology."
