Trust SP-6300P 5.1 Speaker Set
The SP-6300P 5.1 Speaker Set is a basic surround sound system, but it's difficult to be too hard on an audio solution that costs just £32.99 (ex. VAT). For instance, it's not THX certified, the satellites only offer 3-Watts output (hardly enough to shake the rafters), and there's a very limited range of support formats - you can forget about DTS and DTS 96/24 (96KHz signal sampling rate and 24-bit depth). There's no wireless remote control either, which is very frustrating. If you're looking for a low cost solution for your PC or videogames console, or to see what surround sound has to offer, the SP-6300P 5.1 Speaker Set is a reasonable purchase. If audio quality is important, there are much better products available.
Pros: Affordable 5.1 solution; separate control panel
Cons: No digital or optical audio outputs; no remote control
Trust has been developing products for over 20 years now - quite an achievement in today's modern world. With its latest product release, Trust enables you to get your hands on 5.1 surround sound technology at a price that is most definitely affordable.
Over the last few years the cinema has moved into the consumer A/V market with home entertainment systems offering a similar audio experience to the big screen. However, until recently computers have never needed 5.1 surround sound because most people would rather sit in the comfort of their own lounge than be stuck in front of a monitor. But this is all changing thanks to the games market and multimedia innovations.
The SP-6300P 5.1 Speaker Set comes in a silver metallic design (subwoofer is black) and produces 5.1 surround sound, as long as your PC's sound card supports the surround sound standard. The set isn't exactly great in terms of visual appeal or build quality, but for price it's more than adequate. The streamlined slim speakers further contain a two-way system with a separation filter to produce decent sound quality.
Using the wooden 18-Watt RMS subwoofer and the five 3-Watt RMS speakers, the SP-6300P 5.1 Speaker Set is a quick, easy and affordable solution for creating a home cinema or gaming rig. Using the supplied audio cables provided, you can also connect the speaker set to different devices, such as a DVD player or videogames console. The speaker set comes supplied with two sets of three sound cables (3.5mm stereo to 3.5mm stereo and 3.5mm stereo to cinch L+R), and a multi-language instruction manual. The only downside is that the unit doesn't provide digital or optical audio connections.
The volume of the various channels can be controlled using the separate wired control unit. The integrated blue LED indicator allows you to see at a glance whether the system is on or off, and thanks to the magnetic shielding the control unit can be positioned next to a computer monitor without causing any interference. As expected considering the low cost of the system, there's no digital LCD screen that allows you to configure your ideal listening environment.
The satellite speakers are compact and fairly light (195x90x90mm), but their low-cost design reinforces the set's low cost. The speakers don't come with stands that can rotated, either, so you can't angle the speakers up towards the listener for better sound reproduction. The grill cover can't be removed either, a feature a lot of other speakers provide which creates a sleek, chrome look. The wooden subwoofer (260x238x200mm) has a vertical bass reflex design, which produces a relatively powerful bass sound. Furthermore, this complete speaker system has a frequency range of 20-20,000Hz.
Sound output from the speakers was a little shallow and at times lacked depth, due largely to a low output wattage of just 3-Watts. Bass was reasonably punchy, if a little loose, but struggled when turned up at full volume. We tested the speakers with a selection of games and movies and they performed adequately, although we had to adjust the sound control properties of our soundcard and the volume settings on the front of the unit to get the best out of the speakers. We would also have appreciated more length of cable for the rear speakers.
The control unit has separate controls for front, rear, centre, subwoofer and master volume output levels, as well as an on/off switch. All speakers can be controlled from this external device and the connections at the back serve for connecting all the speakers together.
Trust has produced a moderate entry-level 5.1 surround sound speaker set. The low-cost package comes with all you need to get up and running quickly and easily, including cables for connecting the unit to your PC. Remember that you do get what you pay for, so don't expect amazing sound quality. Also bear in mind that you need a soundcard capable of outputting 5.1 audio.
