Apple has introduced Safari 1.0, the first non-beta version of its Web browser, which the company claims has attracted around five million downloads since its initial release on January 7. If these figures are realistic, Safari may become the browser of choice for Mac users worldwide.
The company will make Safari the default browser on all newly-introduced Macintosh computers, starting with the Power Mac G5. Apples also released a software development kit that allows developers to embed the Safari HTML rendering engine directly into their applications.
Apple claims Safari is the fastest Web browser its ever created and that it re-energises the browser category through innovations such as the built-in Google search bar, SnapBack to instantly return to search results, a completely new way to name, organise and present bookmarks, tabbed browsing and automatic pop-up ad blocking.
Safari 1.0 is available now as a free
download. It requires Mac OS X version 10.2 (Jaguar) and is optimised for Mac OS X 10.2.3 or later. Safari 1.0 is localised for English, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, French Canadian, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Swedish, Korean and Simplified Chinese. Mac OS X 10.2 requires a minimum of 128MB of memory and is designed to run on Apple eMac, iMac, iBook, Power Mac G3, Power Mac G4 and any PowerBook system introduced after May 1998.
