Apple Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update

Apple has released the v10.4.6 updated version of its ‘Tiger’ OS X.

The Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update (delta) updates Mac OS X 10.4.5 to version 10.4.6 on both Intel-based Macs and PowerPC-based Macs.

One week after releasing Mac OS X 10.4.5 to the general public, Apple has dropped the first seed of the next Mac OS X update on developers. The first seeds of Mac OS X 10.4.6 are available for both Intel (build 8I1102) and PowerPC (build 8I109) systems. The fixes and improvements that the update provides is identical for both versions.

The update currently delivers about 50 documented improvements, including several OpenGL-related fixes, improvements to CoreImage and CoreGraphics, and other bug corrections for iSync, AppleScript, and other components. Known issues with the update include certain AppleScripts not running correctly and Safari hanging in some situations.

The PowerPC update is available as a 130.9MB download, while the Intel version is 166.2MB. Apple also recently released to developers build 8M108 of Xsan Admin 1.3. Xsan 1.3 will support Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) in excess of 2TB in size, as well as support for up to 16 volumes. The new build otherwise only contains marginal bug fix improvements over the previous build, 8M105.

If you use iSync, you should perform a full sync with your devices before installing this update. Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update includes a later version of iSync with several improvements. With the Mac OS X 10.4.6 system software update, PowerPC-based Macs will restart twice, instead of once, after the initial installation.

Mac OS X 10.4.6 is delivered via the operating system’s Software Update system, but is also available from Apple’s Web site in two forms: one to update Mac OS X 10.4.5 and another to update any version of the operating system from 10.4.0 upwards. Intel and PowerPC versions are available of each of these, and there are equivalent updates for Mac OS X Server. Each version incorporates all the most recent Mac OS X security updates.

A full list of the improvements available for this update are available here.
