Creative has today launched two USB Web cameras, the WebCam NX and the WebCam NX Pro. Available from September, the two entry-level models add to Creative's Web camera range, which now caters for most home and mobile users. Creative does not offer a high-end solution suitable for business use.
The WebCam NX (£19.99) is targeted at users new to video-based communications. The USB 2.0 device should therefore be quick and easy to install, according to Creative, and comes with all the software you need to get up and running. The camera can capture video at resolutions up to 352x288 pixels and still images up to 640x480 pixels.
Built around a 640x480 pixels CMOS sensor, the WebCam NX Pro (£29.99) is a slightly more versatile solution for those requiring better image quality and performance. It also comes with a separate microphone that can be clipped to a monitor or to clothing, such as your collar for example. The camera is capable of producing interpolated video at resolutions up to 1,024x768 pixels and comes with software for videoconferencing, messaging, still image capture, video editing, image sharing and management, and creating video e-mails. There's also a 'spycam' application which can be setup so that the Web camera detects motion.
Both cameras feature a multi-purpose desktop stand, allowing you to clip the them to a regular CRT monitor, LCD monitor or laptop display. Neither Web camera can be detached from the stand and used independently of a PC. If you want a Web camera which can also be used as a basic digital camera, take a look at the company's
PC-Cam range.
