CommVault Systems Galaxy 5.0

CommVault Systems has announced the immediate availability of its flagship backup and recovery software, Galaxy. The first in a series of announcements scheduled from CommVault Systems for this month, Galaxy 5.0 includes enhancements that expand its performance, ease of use, and facilitate flexible, rapid data recovery options, according to the company.

Galaxy 5.0 offers a scaleable data protection solution for distributed and heterogeneous environments. Accessed using a browser-based interface, Galaxy lets you create policy-based actions that can be enforced across all your operating environments, applications and storage types, which should help to simplify managing complex storage networks.

Expanded features and capabilities new to version 5.0 include better platform and application support, enhancements to its enterprise tools, increased data management features, and improved performance and reliability, claims CommVault Systems.

In terms of features and capabilities, Galaxy 5.0 now supports DB2 7.2 (Solaris 8 and AIX 5.1), Netware 6.5, SGI IRIX 6.5.15+ Unix, SAP on HP/UX, Mac OS X 10.2, Windows XP Home Edition, as well as cluster failover support for Netware. NDMP support has been improved and there's now a Unix command-line interface, along with user and management-level reports designed to help you track resource and data availability needs.

Improved performance and reliability capabilities include the ability to backup multiple data streams from multiple clients on a single piece of tape media, a utility which verifies the logical data integrity to ensure that the data on tape can be accessed and read, and a clusterblock-level backup system that bypasses the file system layer for fast volume backups and restores while retaining individual logical file restores.

Network bandwidth controls let you adjust the amount of network capacity a particular client backup will consume, and an automatic update service helps to ensure that all security or software updates are automatically applied to all Galaxy software modules.
