Creative's latest product announcement is the launch of yet another Web camera, the WebCam NX Ultra. The device was designed with the needs of Internet users in mind, according to Creative, and incorporates a CCD rather than CMOS sensor technology to help it stream video at resolutions up to 640x480 pixels and capture stills at up to 1.2-Megapixels (interpolated).
Better looking that most of Creative's other Web camera offerings due to its brushed aluminium front and rounded lines, the WebCam NX Ultra comes with a base unit that lets you position the camera on flat surfaces, standard CRT monitors, LCDs and laptop displays. It connects to your Windows-based computer via a USB 1.1 interface.
The relatively high-end Web camera offers a digital zoom lens and a 75-degrees 'wide' field of view that's some 50 per cent greater than on a standard Web camera, claims Creative, and may appeal to those looking for a peripheral that can also double as a security device. It also comes with a hands-free headset microphone, which will suite those who indulge in instant video messaging and videoconferencing. However, you can't detach the Web camera from its stand and use it independently of a PC. If you want a Web camera which can also be used as a basic digital camera, take a look at the company's PC-Cam range.
