Network Associates' McAfee VirusScan PDA Enterprise is an enterprise-level anti-virus solution for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile devices. The software offers on-device virus protection and allows administrators to manage patches and updates via the software's ePolicy Orchestrator ePO 3.0.1, thereby minimising the reliance on employees to manage the security of their network-connected PDAs.
Pros: Multi-layered protection; centrally managed; small footprint
Cons: PDAs have yet to be targeted by malicious code
The latest PDAs come with the ability to download information from Web sites, e-mail, or wirelessly via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or infrared ports. As a result, they have become an added point of attack for threats to enter your organisation's network. Although viruses for PDAs are extremely rare, they're not impervious and a virus could cause damage the data and files on your PDA. McAfee VirusScan PDA Enterprise is designed to protect your company-wide PDAs from the increasing danger of malicious threats, which could lead to costly system downtime or the loss of sensitive information.
The software updates itself on employee's PDAs when they synchronise their Pocket PC PDA with their network-attached PCs. This layer of virus and malicious code protection adds to your organisation's anti-virus protection at the gateway and desktop and is not designed to replace you current desktop and server protection solutions.
Similar to desktop anti-virus solutions, McAfee VirusScan PDA Enterprise can be scheduled to perform automatic updates of the latest virus definition files, which can be downloaded directly from the PDA's Internet connection, via a direct wireless connection or during synchronisation when the device is connected to a PC with an Internet connection. Once the software has been installed using the PC, all further updates and scanning take place directly on the PDA. The software is managed by McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator ePO 3.0.1, which provides software deployment, policy management and graphical reporting utilities from a single console.
