Veritas NetBackup 5.0 Server

Veritas has updated its backup and recovery software for mid-size organisations and remote offices. NetBackup 5.0 Server (previously called NetBackup Business Server) is part of Veritas' utility computing strategy of tailoring software for customers' computing resources, as required by their own spikes in traffic. The software integrates with Veritas' CommandCentral Service, which the company created last year to deliver software as a utility, and Data Lifecycle Manager, which provides data archiving, retention and retrieval. NetBackup 5.0 Server supports an unlimited number of clients and tape storage devices to help protect additional systems and databases. Other key features include disk staging, synthetic backup and automated disaster recovery.

Pros: Unlimited client protection; supports remote locations; scaleable
Cons: Overkill for smaller organisations

Release: Veritas Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS), the leading storage software provider, has announced the immediate availability of Veritas NetBackup 5.0 Server (formerly Veritas NetBackup Business Server), cost-effective and comprehensive heterogeneous backup and recovery software targeted for mid-size organisations, remote offices and IT workgroups. Integral to the company's utility computing strategy to help ensure that data and applications are always available, Veritas NetBackup Server software operates in Unix, Windows, Linux and NetWare environments, helping to drive down the costs of protecting data.

Mid-size organisations often face challenges such as supporting the growth of their businesses, limited IT staff, and the need for advanced disaster recovery capabilities. Veritas NetBackup 5.0 Server provides a custom architecture, aligning and scaling data protection with the business needs of mid-sized enterprises, providing enterprise strength backup and recovery software previously not available to the mid-size market.

'Mid-size organisations are subject to the same data management challenges as enterprise organisations, but on a different scale. They must react to data growth while still protecting their current environment from downtime or disasters,' said Nancy Marrone-Hurley, senior analyst, Enterprise Storage Group. 'A data protection solution that targets the needs of mid-size organisations can help ensure business continuity and allow users to affordably maintain the integrity of their data and applications.'

Veritas NetBackup Server addresses the needs of the mid-size organisation with the following benefits: scalability and investment protection (integral to meeting the needs of growing mid-size organisations, NetBackup Server provides virtually limitless client protection and tape storage support, removing the barriers of growth and allowing IT administrators to protect additional systems and databases); cost efficiency (NetBackup Server provides enterprise-level data protection capabilities such as disk staging, synthetic backup and automated disaster recovery at a reduced cost to midsize organisations); and advanced disaster recovery (integrating technology from Vertitas Volume Replicator, NetBackup Server helps reduce the time it takes to restore data in the event of a disaster - catalogue data at the primary site is automatically replicated to a disaster recovery site so that the information is online and available should a disaster strike).

Veritas NetBackup Server also extends support to remote offices and mobile users. From an easy-to-use graphical dashboard, administrators can monitor policies and proactively troubleshoot backup and recovery issues at remote locations without the need for onsite personnel. With the desktop and laptop option to NetBackup Server, information outside the data centre is protected and can be synchronised between multiple machines in real-time, helping to reduce costly IT interaction.

Veritas NetBackup 5.0 Server is a key component of the company's backup and recovery strategy, integrating with Veritas CommandCentral Service software, to enable the delivery of backup and recovery as a utility and Veritas Data Lifecycle Manager, with data archiving, retention and retrieval capabilities to meet key compliance requirements.

'Veritas understands the needs of growing organisations to have reliable data protection for all critical applications,' said Brenda Zawatski, Vice President of Product Marketing, Veritas Software. 'Veritas NetBackup Server provides backup and recovery capabilities to scale and optimise IT environments while still maintaining cost efficiency.'
