OpenOffice has released the latest version of its free office suite, OpenOffice 1.1.5. Offering similar programs to Microsoft's office - but with much fewer features - OpenOffice is an open-source application suite that adheres to open source licences (LGPL and SISSL), meaning it's free to use, improve, modify and redistribute.
OpenOfficeis an open, feature-rich multi-platform office productivity suite. The user interface and the functionality is very similar to other products in the market like Microsoft's Office or IBM's Lotus SmartSuite, but in contrast to these commercial products is absolutely free.
The organisation has also announced the second beta of OpenOffice 2.0, which means it probably has bugs, so use with caution. You can, of course download and test it out, and file bug reports with the organisation's QA Project. OpenOffice has made of note of informing Windows users to ensure that they obtain the file that includes the latest date, e.g., 050828.
