Mobility Email Takes Messaging Mobile

Mobility Email is a portable open-source distribution of Mozilla's Thunderbird. It can be used on a desktop computer as a normal e-mail application, or it can run directly from a USB key (like the iPod Shuffle) without needing to be installed on a computer.

Mobility Email is based on technology from PortableThunderbird with Enigmail/GPG, which in turn is based on Portable Thunderbird. Mobility Email has more features than the standard Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client and has several extensions pre-loaded to allow you to access your Hotmail, Yahoo! and Lycos e-mail accounts, and to view your contacts. It also uses the Enigmail OpenPGP extension and GnuPG to provide OpenPGP signing and encryption.

The specific software included in the distribution include: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5beta2, Enigmail 0.93.0, GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG) 1.4.2 (Win32), WebMail 0.7.0, Hotmail 0.8.0 for WebMail, Yahoo! 0.5.1 for WebMail, MailDotCom 0.6.1, Lycos 0.1.4 for Webmail, Talkback 1.4.1, and PortableThunderbird Launcher 1.1.0.

Ninety per cent of Mobility Email is the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client. This is a fully-featured e-mail client that has stuff like saved search folders, message grouping, global inbox, comprehensive data migration, RSS integration, privacy controls and quick search. It also uses the Enigmail OpenPGP extension and GnuPG to provide OpenPGP signing and encryption, giving you access to the same security system used by the US government.

Mobility Email components are released under several different open-source licenses. Mozilla Thunderbird is released under the Mozilla Public License (MPL). PortableThunderbird is released under the GNU GPL. Enigmail OpenPGP is released under the MPL and GNU GPL. WebMail (and its add-ons) are released under the MPL. GnuPG is released under the GNU GPL. It can be downloaded here.
