Microsoft has released a number of patches for its Office suite to help eliminate the threat from remote code execution (905413).
The list of the affected software includes Microsofts Office 2000 Service Pack 3, Office XP Service Pack 3, Office 2003 Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2, Works Suites, Office X and Office 2004 for Mac.
Vulnerabilities in the current version of Microsofts Office suite could allow remote code execution, claims the company. These updates resolve several newly-discovered, privately reported and public vulnerabilities.
One vulnerable with certain versions of Office is that if a user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of the client workstation.
An attacker could then install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
Microsoft recommends that you apply the updates immediately. The patches can be downloaded here.
