Averatec Laptops Go 'Climate Neutral'

All of the CO2 emissions from three years of Averatec laptop use will be neutralised, says the company.

From today Averatec will only sell climate-neutral laptops in Europe. The CO2 emissions generated by any Averatec laptop over three years use will be ‘neutralised’ by Averatec through the purchase of guarantees of origin from hydroelectric power projects.

This move is part of Averatec’s ongoing commitment to protecting the environment and drive towards achieving a zero impact on the climate. It has been set up in partnership with Sustainable Partner GmbH, whom says that it has produced a highly comprehensive study on climate neutral laptops.

The climate neutral laptop initiative follows Averatec’s ‘successful’ CO2 campaign launched last year where for each laptop purchased Averatec pays for the neutralisation of one tonne of CO2 emissions as part of the ClimatePartner initiative (www.climatepartner.co.uk).

‘Climate-neutral laptops were the next logical step in our drive to protect the climate,’ said Bengt Stahlschmidt, managing director of Averatec Europe GmbH. ‘CO2 emissions occur mainly through power consumption. Neutralisation is organised for us by Sustainable Partner and is based on the fundamentals of the Kyoto Convention. .’

Depending on the way it is used a laptop’s power consumption and therefore its CO2 emissions will vary greatly. Studies have shown that when a laptop is exclusively used privately, over three years, around 40 per cent less CO2 is emitted than when used for business.

‘Although our laptops are targeted at the consumer market, when calculating CO2 emissions we worked on the basis that 50 per cent of users are professionals’, explained Stahlschmidt. ‘We would rather neutralise a little more CO2 than too little.’

Peace Brother!
