Electronic Arts Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King will be available around Christmas time for the PC. It'll also be available at the same time on all the popular games consoles. Based on Peter Jackson's upcoming (December 17) film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy novel, the final instalment in the trilogy lets you play as Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Sam and Frodo.

Set in the same locations from the upcoming movie, EA's second Lord of the Rings hack-and-slash romp is played in a third-person perspective. A new multiplayer co-op mode lets players form their own Fellowships before travelling through Middle Earth to destroy the One Ring by casting it into the Crack of Doom and freeing the populace from the clutches of the Dark Lord Sauron. Sound familiar?

You'll encounter around 12 interactive environments reproduced from the films, including the Paths of the Dead, Minas Tirith and Pelennor Fields, before your final confrontation at the Black Gate and the Crack of Doom. The gaming environments are interactive, allowing you to incorporate the various settings into your strategies for both melee and ranged combat. For example, you can jump and swing from ropes, fire catapults and kick boulders. Exclusive movie footage from the film should string the storyline along nicely.

The game's graphics look superb, voice-overs provided by the film's actors and a musical score composed by Academy Award-winner Howard Shore are a few more great features. This'll be one game for sure to help you fill your Christmas stocking.
