Fujitsu Workgroup Scanners

The fi-5120C and fi-5220C flatbed scanners are Fujitsu's latest professional document scanners. With speeds of up to 30ppm or 60 images per minute at 150dpi, regardless of the colour mode, the models are the fastest A4 desktop scanners in their class, according to Fujitsu.

In addition to their speed, the scanners' flexibility and design may be ideal for multitasking scanning - ranging from archiving and text recognition up to workflow support. The unique foldaway output tray on the fi-5120C should make it ideal for office environments where space is at a premium.

The 50 sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) is suited for unattended scanning of multipage documents and batches, with both models offering high-speed A4 colour scanning at up to 30ppm at a resolution of 150dpi. The scanners' duplex capability enables the capture of both sides of the original document in just one pass at up to 60 images per minute. The scan process is automated and both the fi-5120C and fi-5220C can capture in mono, greyscale or colour at an optical resolution of 600dpi. The output resolution can be freely adjusted from 50- to 600dpi, in 1dpi increments.

The fi-5120C and fi-5220C scanners process paper sizes from A8 to A4 or legal, in paper thicknesses between 52- and 127gsm. The fi-5220C2 model is additionally fitted with an integrated flatbed unit for scanning bound or very fragile documents, which could not be fed through the automatic document feeder (ADF).

Both scanner models are also equipped with a special ultrasonic double feed detection mechanism that immediately interrupts the operation should it detect one or more sheets of paper being drawn into the paper path simultaneously. This unique detection mechanism should greatly improve reliability and ease of the scanning process. Additionally, both Fujitsu scanner models enable the scanning of embossed plastic credit cards compliant to the ISO 7810 standard.

When scanning batches of documents in monochrome mode, both fi-5120C and fi-5220C support the user with the 'Advanced Dynamic Threshold Control' function, which automatically optimises every single page of the batch individually to its visible quality as well as to its ability to be used for further processing tasks like OCR/ICR.

The user can also select to apply functions such as image emphasis, error diffusion, moiré removal, dithering, and drop out colour definition, relieving the user of costly and time-consuming post-editing of images. Apart from multiple image enhancing options, both scanner models boast several processing functions for optimising the scanning process. These include automatic alignment of documents that have been fed in skewed (Auto Deskew), and automatic trimming of the scanned image to the actual format of the original (Auto Cropping).

All enhancement functionalities are user-selectable from within the included TWAIN and ISIS driver packages, directly influencing the scanners' actions. Their programmable control panels are supported through push-of-a-button functions such as Scan-to-File, Scan-to-View, Scan-to-Print, Scan-to-Fax, Scan-to-Email and Scan-to-Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server. The full version of Adobe's Acrobat 7.0 Standard is included with both scanner models. Connectivity options include Ultra SCSI and USB 2.0. Depending on the task, you can automatically create graphic formats such as TIFF, JPEG and BMP or select PDF format for secure electronic file exchange.

The optional imprinter for the fi-5120C scanner will allow for a 40 character stamp to be printed on the back of every scanned document, thereby proving that all documents have been scanned. In cases where different batches of similar documents are to be scanned regularly, Fujitsu's optional driver extension SoftIPC V.2.5 can contribute to increasing efficiency even further. This package enables defining and selecting monochrome mode scanning profiles that are optimised for different types of documents.

Moreover, the fi-5120C and fi-5220C can be operated as a network device by attaching them to the Fujitsu fi-5000N network adapter. This device allows multiple users to access a shared scanner from within their regular archiving application, just as if it were directly attached to their workstation. In addition to German, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, the fi-5120C and fi-5220C now also support the Russian-language environment.

The new Fujitsu fi-5120C and fi-5220C document scanners will be available from specialist dealers in December for a recommended retail price of £715 (ex. VAT) for the fi-5120C and £1285 (ex. VAT) for the fi-5220C.
