Sony Ships Its Fastest DVD Burner

Sony’s latest DVD offering is a complete retail kit with fast, DVD-RAM compatible drive and comprehensive Nero software package. There’s no Blu-ray support, but it should tied you over until you made the HD jump.

The drive will ship as part of a complete retail package which includes replaceable front bezels and Nero’s excellent Software Suite. The retail kit will also incudes bonus tools for DVD authoring, audio editing and DVD back-up.

Sony added the first DVD-RAM compatible drives to its line-up last month following its initial first-to-market launch of Dual-RW DVD drives. The new DRU-820A will expand the existing product line-up, providing even faster read and write speeds which can also be used in conjunction with the array of accessories available in Sony’s various range of retail kits.

In addition to DVD-RAM media with a rewritable speed of 5x, the DRU-820A burns all DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW media, including the latest double and dual layer DVD recordable discs, maintaining its high read/write speeds and writing quality. The DRU-820A records DVD+R DL media at 8x speed, DVD-R DL media at 6x speed and single-layer DVD±R discs at 16x speed.

Rewritable DVDs can be recorded at 8x (DVD+RW) and 6x (DVD-RW) speed respectively and the drive offers 48x CD speed. The drive is equipped with a buffer memory size of 2MB and a fast Ultra DMA Mode 2 ATAPI interface.

‘The added DVD-RAM media support makes the new Sony DVD writers even more versatile,’ commented Christoph Cyrol, Marketing Manager for optical drives at Sony Europe.

‘Thanks to the comprehensive, powerful and easy to use Nero software package bundled with Sony’s retail kits, the DRU-820A is our fastest DVD burner - ideally suited for demanding audio, photo and video recording tasks, as well as data storage and entry-level back-up’.

The DRU-820A will be available from mid March at an estimated street price of £45.
