Samsung Q1 UMPC Sees Light Of Day

Samsung Electronics, the consumer electronics and IT equipment guru, is set to challenge the limits of mobile technology with the launch of its Q1, a new concept in digital multimedia convergence - in other words, an UMPC (Ultra-Mobile PC).

Based on a new form factor developed by Samsung Electronics, Intel and Microsoft, the Q1 delivers diverse computing features that combine the capabilities of a PDA, MP3/PMP, GPS system, tablet PC and storage device in one sleek and stylish mobile device.

Designed to meet consumer demand for high performance mobile computing with ultimate multimedia functionality, Samsung’s Q1 balances connectivity, entertainment and computing performance with ultra mobility.

Weighing just 779g and only 24.5mm deep, Samsung’s Q1 features a 7-inch wide touchscreen display, minimum of 20GB of portable memory and supports all multimedia formats. It even utilises the full functionality of a conventional laptop for those who demand computing performance with Intel Celeron M or Pentium M processors and Microsoft’s Windows XP tablet operating system.

Bluetooth and LAN wireless connectivity and optional GPS navigation ensures Internet and navigational access for the professional on the move, while its 800x480-pixel LCD touchscreen and Windows XP functionality guarantees high-definition capabilities and extensive applications for the multimedia enthusiast. You can even enjoy different multimedia such as video, music, photographs directly without booting.

Restrictions placed on smartphones, PDAs, PMPs and MP3 players, such as slow bandwidth, poor viewing, sound quality and trouble synching with PCs coupled with the demand for even greater mobility alternatives to laptops has created a desire in the market for a device that combines all of this functionality in a mobile design. Samsung Ultra Mobile PC, Q1 will be introduced for the first time at CeBIT.

Key core features of the unit include a 900MHz Intel Celeron M ULV processor, Intel 915GMS Internal GFXchipset, 512MB DDR2 400MHz memory, H/P out, array mic, stereo speakers (2-Watts), 1.8-inch HDD (20- to 80GB), 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and operating time of around 3.5 hours.
