Sony HD SXRD Home Cinema Projector

As part of its Home Experience, Sony has showcased the VPL-VW100 (£5707/$10000), an HD-resolution (1920x1080 pixels) SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) projector with a stunning 15000:1 contrast ratio designed for home cinema enthusiasts.

The projector uses the most advanced technology available to produce clear, sharp and natural images, and incorporates versatile features with a sleek white design.

It also offers Sony’s highest ever contrast ratio with its Advanced Iris System, which controls the shutter aperture. This permits contrast ratios of up to 15,000:1; producing white that is brighter in the bright scenes and black which is deeper in the dark scenes.

Leaning on some of the same technology found in Sony's acclaimed QUALIA 004 SXRD projector, the VPL-VW100 model features a 400-Watt Pure Xenon lamp that promises unrivalled colour reproduction. The lamp approximates sun light and can reproduce colours closest to the natural spectrum including the red bandwidth, and is widely used in professional film projectors. Sony specifies a lamp life (to half brightness) of 2200 hours.

While the VPL-VW100’s hard plastic case doesn’t provide the same visual flair as the QUALIA 004’s metal and glass, it’s still a long way from a plain vanilla box. The large zoom lens is centered in front, but there are no alternate lens options. But the 1.8x zoom will fill a 100-inch diagonal (87-inches wide) 16:9 screen at a distance from 10- to 17.5 feet.

The on-projector controls are located behind a panel on the side of the case. Further down on the same side are the inputs. But will the VPL-VW100 accept a 1080p/60 input directly at its inputs? According to Sony, the projector now will accept 1080p/60 at its HDMI and DVI inputs.
