Innovation of the Month

Unlike desktop PCs, that have consistent designs and easily upgradeable parts, notebooks are subject to restrictive size and thermal constraints, leading to multiple customized designs.

In order to implement a new generation of graphics technology in their notebooks, manufacturers have to do extensive redesigns, resulting in the slow adoption of the latest graphics technology.

MXM (Mobile PCI Express Module), the result of a joint design effort between nVidia and the industry’s leading laptop manufacturers, provides a consistent interface for mobile PCI Express graphics in order to achieve faster time to market for the latest laptop graphics, multiple system configurations and price points from a single system design, compatibility for any graphics solution from any vendor, and configure-to-order upgradeable graphics through laptop manufacturers, or potentially by consumers.

But why the heck would you want MXM on a desktop? MSI’s Geminium-Go is currently a unique masterpiece that leverages the best characteristics of laptop MXM graphics technology and brings them to the desktop world.

And when installing one or two MXM graphic cards onto the MSI Geminium-Go, you can apply mobile GPUs in desktop computer. So if you want to upgrade the graphic performance, you could change the MXM module without changing the whole Geminium-Go board. Genius!

With the Geminium-Go, MSI is shouting about the fact that you can experience better graphic performance with low power consumption. During testing in 3DMark05 for instance, the Geminium-Go got over 4200 points, while an nVidia GeForce 6600-based desktop graphics card got only 3600 (1024x768 pixels, SLI mode), according to the company. Due to less power needed, the Geminium-Go also produces less noise and heat. As a result, the large fan is not required.

Powered by two nVidia GeForce Go 6600 mobile GPUs, the Geminium-Go offers two MXM slots for installing MXM modules and enables SLI mode in a single graphic card. It also comes with a total of 512MB of onboard DDR graphics memory (256MB on each board) and a PCI Express 16x interface. Of course, it’s upgradeable to the newly launched GeForce Go 7 series like the 7800, 7600 and 7400.

Laptop graphics processors and the MXM graphics modules themselves are very highly optimised for low power consumption and low heat output. It is for these reasons that laptop graphics parts cost more than their desktop equivalents for they have to meet more rigorous standards. Given these characteristics, MSI sees that there’s a likely market space in the desktop segment who would appreciate the use of mobile graphics modules.
