Disgo, a manufacturer of removable USB flash memory devices, has announced an innovative addition to its range. The Xkey is a USB flash memory device with a difference - it comes with a built-in processor, crypto engine, database, application server, Microsoft Exchange client and 256MB (£199) or 512MB (£299) of non-upgradable flash storage, providing you with a tool for working securely outside the office, online or offline. After plugging the Xkey into your PC and entering your passwords, the hardware/software solution should then bring up a messaging environment based on Microsoft's Exchange server, including e-mail, calendar and contacts, which can be synchronised securely with a central office-based server on the move (no built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi). According to Disgo, Xkey leaves no traces of your activities on the host computer and lost or stolen Xkeys are inaccessible without the correct user name and password. In addition, all communications to and from the Exchange server and all files on the Xkey are encrypted using an embedded SSL VPN security application.
Pros: Synchronises securely with an Exchange server
Cons: No built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi; maximum storage of 512MB
Release: Xkey is the first pocketable USB device that truly enables employees to work from any PC, complete with the business critical applications, corporate data and security required for productive work, has been launched.
Xkey by disgo is a unique portable device for companies that want to let their office-based employees extend the working day - or indeed work remotely - without the physical and financial burden of a dedicated PC. This new device - no bigger than a lighter - incorporates a powerful microprocessor, a crypto engine, 256MB of flash storage, a full Microsoft Exchange client, a database for securely storing Exchange data, a synchronisation engine that connects to the corporate Exchange server and an embedded SSL VPN security application.
This functionality is incorporated into an easy-to-use, key-sized device which users simply plug into any PC with Internet connectivity, type in their passwords and are ready to work. Users' entire messaging environment - including e-mails, calendar and contacts - are immediately available to work on both offline and online. Xkey by Disgo also contains other corporate data, such as spreadsheets, presentations and documents, needed for work outside the office.
For corporations standardising on Microsoft Exchange, Xkey is the ideal solution for enabling staff to be responsive anytime, anywhere. The device's security provides complete peace of mind when employees are working from non-company issued PCs and its self provisioning deployment and zero server-side changes make it effortless for the IT department to manage. Furthermore, Disgo Xkey removes all traces of the user from the host PC one of many innovative security features the device provides.
Ray Rice , Technology Consultant, Clever Stuff Limited, stated: 'This truly mobile device can transform companies from a 9-to-5, office-based organisation into a highly responsive 24/7 location-independent business for less than the cost of a tube ticket. Xkey weighs 0.5 per cent of a laptop and with this device employees can work remotely from any PC on the planet with a return on investment measured in weeks not months.'
